Lit Chicks Book Brunch, Toasting "A Deeper Love Inside" The Porshe Santiago Story Hosted by C.B

C.B hosts Our Lit Chicks Book Toast

Saturday, June 15, 2013

The meeting began with brunch and "Deeper Love" Mimosas ( our signature drink, see recipe below).
We got right into the discussion of Porshe...like the car...Santiaga, the second born child to Ricky Santiaga.

Many of us felt the story moved very slow through the first half and that Porshe spent too much time on the reservation. We also discussed if this story was believable. How could a child encounter and accomplish all the things Porshe did at such a young age: taking care of her drugged out mother, being out on the streets of Brooklyn at night, juggling multiple jobs, and saving $20,000. Others said they could relate.  Growing up on the East Coast, Porshe's story was like everyday life.

Having read The Coldest Winter Ever first, we now see Winter from a different perspective.  We felt sorry for her and were rooting for her to grow up and finally get it.  After reading A Deeper Love, how do you feel about Winter now?

Throughout the book, I found myself asking the question, 'Where is Suri?' Lit chick S.T. believes that Porshe’s friends on the reservation were fake. What do you think?

Lit Chick T.J felt Porshe had a serious eating disorder along with multiple personalities.  Who agrees?

Lit Chick L.M had a great alternate ending.   What if Porshe was actually in a mental home and fantasized the whole story?

No doubt, A Deeper Love was an excellent read.  The book got 9 out 9 cheers!

Why I choose this book: I picked the book because it was the long awaited/anticipated follow up to Sista Souljah's first book, The Coldest Winter Ever.  I knew it was going to be good based on the way The Coldest Winter ended.  I was right, the book did not disappoint!

June's Book Selection - Five Smooth Stones

June's book selection - Five Smooth Stones by Ann FairBairn

Selected by Lit Chick Kewanda.  Her book party will take place in early July.  Please check back for more details to post.

Five Smooth Stones By +Ann Fairbairn +Chicago Review Press April 2009
David Champlin is a black man born into poverty in Depression-era New Orleans who achieves great success and then sacrifices everything to lead his people in the difficult, day-by-day struggle of the civil rights movement. Sara Kent is the beloved and vital white girl who loved David from the moment she first saw him, but they struggled over David's belief that a marriage for them would not be right in the violent world he had to confront.  Likening the struggle of black Americans to the "five smooth stones" the biblical David carried against Goliath in lieu of arms, this novel's range encompasses decades and continents-but that range is insignificant compared with the intimate picture of its hero's irresistible warmth and inner conflicts.  First published in 1966, this epic has become one of the most loved American bestsellers.

ABOUT LIT CHICKS! How to Join Lit Chicks & Toasts with Tales.

Lit Chicks : Literary Chicks.  Chicks who enjoy reading and cocktails!

Our purpose; to celebrate friendships & connections cultivated through the joy of reading!

Follow us by adding our blog or submitting your email in the link at the bottom of the page.  I'll contact you to welcome you to the club and share how you can receive a free Lit Chicks t-shirt!!

JOIN US.  A book club for ladies who celebrate literature based in Los Angeles, CA.  Here's how we roll.  Each month a member chooses a book selection and hosts a book party for members to share comments and feedback in a fun and festive atmosphere over cocktails!  We're honest and open about our opinions which is the best part. Each month we will post the book and a signature cocktail recipe.  You can read along and toast with us at the culmination of each book, hence the "toast with tales".  You don't have to read every book.  Only the ones that interest you.  At the close of each party we will rate/toast the book with cheers.  One cheer represents one member's like for the book.  We will post the number of cheers. If you don't drink alcohol no worries, we will offer non-alcoholic (virgin) mocktails as well. The goal isn't really the drinking but more about celebrating the literature with festivity (a word I "coined").

A Lit Chicks celebration is two-fold... It's celebrating connections & friendships created through the joy of reading!

All you have to do to join is post a request in the comments and submit your email to the link at the bottom.  I will send you our club guidelines.  After you've read 3 selections you will get our official Lit Chicks t-shirt.  Post a pic wearing the shirt with your book and you're official!!

We hope you enjoy the club and always toast responsibly!

Cheers ;) !!
